The internet is entering a major turning point as traffic from AI bots is increasing at an unprecedented rate. According to Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, this trend could lead to a remarkable milestone: by 2027, bot traffic could surpass human traffic.
Speaking at the SXSW event in Austin, he said that the explosion of generative AI is driving a fundamental change in how the internet is used.
When bots 'browse the web' more often than humans.
According to Prince, the biggest difference lies in how bots and humans access information. An average person looking to buy a product, such as a camera, usually only visits a few websites for reference. But with an AI agent, that number can increase thousands of times.
This happens because AI chatbots need to aggregate data from many sources to provide answers. As a result, traffic not only increases dramatically but also puts real pressure on web infrastructure, forcing systems to handle a much larger volume of queries than before.
Before the AI boom, bots accounted for only about 20% of internet traffic, mostly from data-gathering tools like Google's. A small portion came from malicious or spam bots.
However, with AI's seemingly bottomless data demands, this picture is rapidly changing. Prince suggests that within just a few years, bots could become the primary source of internet traffic.
The internet will have to be 'redesigned' to serve AI.
The rise of bots isn't just about the number of visits; it also necessitates changes in infrastructure architecture.
One idea being discussed is building 'sandboxes' for AI agents — temporary environments created for bots to perform tasks, which then automatically disappear upon completion. For example, when a user asks the AI to plan a trip, the system could create a separate environment to handle the entire task and then close it.
Prince envisioned that in the near future, millions of such environments could be created every second, similar to opening a new tab in a browser.
Of course, all of these activities require physical infrastructure such as servers and data centers. Prince compares the current situation to the Covid-19 period, when internet traffic surged due to the demand for video streaming on platforms like YouTube and Netflix.
However, the difference this time is that the increase is not a short-term jump followed by stabilization, but a continuous upward trend with no sign of stopping. This makes the pressure on Internet infrastructure more sustainable and unpredictable.
According to the CEO of Cloudflare, many people are still underestimating the nature of AI. He argues that it's not just a new technology, but a 'platform shift' — similar to the transition from desktop computers to mobile devices in the past.
The difference lies in the fact that AI is not only changing how we access information, but also changing how information is created and consumed.
