Hacker group Crimson Collective claims to have hacked and taken over Nintendos data. If confirmed, this would be the latest major cyber attack since Red Hat.
Nintendo has reportedly become the latest target of the infamous hacker group Crimson Collective , according to a newly published online report.
According to cybersecurity intelligence firm Hackmanac , the hacker group shared screenshots showing a series of folders called 'Nintendo topic files', claiming that they are now holding sensitive data from the Japanese company. As of 10:03 a.m. EDT on October 11, Nintendo has yet to comment or confirm the incident, making the hacker group's claims unverifiable.
While this cyberattack has not been officially confirmed, the Crimson Collective group has been responsible for multiple malicious attacks in recent days, so it is entirely possible that Nintendo could be the next victim.
This month alone, the Crimson Collective hacked software company Red Hat , breaking into its internal GitHub repository and stealing 570GB of data . Red Hat quickly confirmed the incident, saying the hackers also made a ransom demand. If the Nintendo attack is real, it's likely that a similar scenario is underway.
Cyberattacks against gaming companies are no longer uncommon. Over the years, a number of studios have had their data leaked, from information about unreleased projects to personal data of employees. A notable example is Insomniac Games – the creator of the upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Wolverine series – which was the target of a major attack in 2023, resulting in the release of many confidential documents online.
