This Spanish horror film follows a reporter and cameraman as they are quarantined inside a building where a virus is spreading, turning the people inside into zombies. Similar to 28 Years Later and its unsteady iPhone camerawork, REC presents its story through 'found footage' shot by one of the characters, making for a realistic and heart-pounding viewing experience. While Boyle and Garland's new film is much less claustrophobic than REC, the latter also seems to incorporate supernatural elements into its terrifying depiction of a zombie apocalypse.
Overlord (2018)
This zombie film begins with a group of American soldiers fighting for their lives in a dangerous, war-torn land: Nazi-occupied France. There, they discover that the Third Reich is conducting experiments on villagers, turning them into vicious members of the undead. Both Overlord and 28 Years Later feature a generous dose of gore and action to satisfy die-hard zombie fans, while also showing the horrors of war and violence, both human and zombie.
I Am Legend (2007)
Based on Richard Matheson's classic novel, I Am Legend centers on a scientist who is trying to find a cure for a virus that has wiped out most of humanity and turned the survivors into flesh-eating vampires. Note that the film's alternate ending, seen in theaters, is the canon ending. Like 28 Years Later and its predecessors, this modern adaptation of I Am Legend explores pain, loss, and humanity's capacity for evil, with some characters seemingly acting even worse than zombies, making for a particularly dark and thought-provoking story.

Army of the Dead follows a group of former mercenaries who attempt to rob a Las Vegas casino years after a zombie outbreak has devastated the city. Like 28 Years Later, director Zack Snyder's action-packed zombie film follows the heroes as they leave the comfort of their homes to explore the zombie-infested land. The film also features several different types of zombies, including the slow-moving undead and the intelligent, agile Alpha zombie, adding different levels of terror and action to the story. Snyder's film even echoes the 28 Years Later-inspired aesthetic, with the Alpha zombie, Zeus, ruling over his undead army in the ruins of Las Vegas like a medieval king.
28 Days Later (2002)

Starring Cillian Murphy decades before Oppenheimer, 28 Days Later follows a man who wakes up from a coma in post-apocalyptic London, where he's forced to survive a horde of infected zombies and advanced survivors. 28 Days Later is best known for popularizing the hyper-fast zombies in the frenetic, terrifying imagery that's reimagined in the third film. While 28 Years Later takes place long after the original zombie outbreak, the original film also explores how people try to rebuild and maintain society while blurring the lines between humans and the infected.
