A new story about an old misunderstanding is circulating once again—and NASA is once again clarifying the situation.

It all started with a rehashed story that NASA had 'discovered' the 13th zodiac sign—Ophiuchus, or the Serpent Bearer. Anyone born between November 29th and December 17th would no longer be Scorpio or Sagittarius, but Ophiuchus. The Scorpio window would be shortened to just seven days, and the entire astrological chart would change, meaning some Pisces, Leo, and Libra signs would have different zodiac signs. As online astrology enthusiasts began to panic, NASA gently joined the online battle to clarify the situation.

"We see your comment about a zodiac story reappear every few years," the space agency wrote in a tweet. "No, we do not change the zodiac." It included a link to a Tumblr post explaining what actually happened.

For many people, the Zodiac is one of the most reliable methods of astrology, based on the relationship between astronomical phenomena and a person's destiny based on their birth date.

Three thousand years ago, the ancient Babylonian civilization invented the concept of the 12 zodiac signs , corresponding to 12 constellations. A person's birth date is associated with a particular constellation, and this influences their personality.

However, NASA recently stated that astronomy and astrology are two different fields. Furthermore, the positions, sizes, and shapes of the 12 constellations have changed and are no longer the same as they used to be. This is due to a shift in the Earth's axis, which has caused the vernal equinox to also shift.

And after 3,000 years, the vernal equinox has now shifted from the constellation Aries to the constellation Pisces. Therefore, the zodiac signs today are off by more than one sign, or one month, compared to the ancient way of calculating the zodiac.

NASA states that the Babylonians only used 12 constellations for ease of calculation with their 12-month calendar. In reality, our sun moves through 13 constellations. This means there are 13 zodiac signs. The 13th zodiac sign is called Ophiuchus, which is the constellation Serpent Bearer.

Things to know about the Ophiuchus zodiac sign.

Like all other constellations in the zodiac system, Ophiuchus was documented by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century, and its name in Latin means "snake bearer" - the constellation Ophiuchus.

Snakes are often associated with doctors, so Ophiuchus is often linked to the image of healing. The Romans associated this constellation with Asclepius, who learned the secret of immortality by observing a snake healing its fellow snakes with herbs. Zeus killed Asclepius with a lightning bolt because he did not want everyone to be immortal, but later honored his good deeds by granting him a place in heaven.

The Babylonians associated this constellation with Nirah, a deity sometimes depicted with the upper body of a human and the legs of a serpent.

Ophiuchus is the 13th zodiac sign in astrology (not a science) and represents those born between November 30 and December 17.

Ophiuchus is a fairly large constellation, yet one of the least known. Although Ophiuchus touches the ellipse—the path the sun appears to take across the sky—astrologists for centuries overlooked it as part of the zodiac. The constellation finally received recognition in 2011 when NASA added Ophiuchus to its list of zodiac signs and rearranged the astrological calendar.

Ophiuchus [Oaf-ih-YOU-kus] spans 948 square degrees in area. It can be found in the northwest of the center of the Milky Way. It lies near the constellations Aquila, Serpens, Hercules, and opposite Orion. The southern part lies between Scorpius to the west and Sagittarius to the east. The location of Ophiuchus is:

  • Ecliptic: 17, 18 hours
  • Deviation: -4.24 degrees
  • Visible: between 80 degrees and -80 degrees
  • Best time to watch: In July around 9 PM.

The new order of the 13 zodiac signs, corresponding to birth dates according to NASA's new concept, is as follows:

  • Capricorn: January 20 - February 16.
  • Aquarius: February 16 - March 11.
  • Pisces: March 11 - April 18.
  • Aries: April 18 - May 13.
  • Taurus: May 13 - June 21.
  • Gemini: June 21 - July 20.
  • Cancer: July 20 - August 10.
  • Leo: August 10 - September 16.
  • Virgo: September 16 - October 30.
  • Libra: October 30 - November 23.
  • Scorpio: November 23 - November 29.
  • Ophiuchus - Serpent Bearer: November 29 - December 17.
  • Sagittarius: December 17 - January 20.

NASA stated that they are not changing the zodiac but simply doing the math. Their mission is to study astronomy and provide numbers relevant to the present day, not astrology, a remnant of ancient civilizations.

In short, astronomy and astrology are two different fields, and the 13 zodiac signs are just a concept from NASA. So, whether you believe it or not is up to you.

  • A rare moment: a comet appears simultaneously with noctilucent clouds.
  • Surprising fact: The pyramids were originally white with a gold-plated top, not the earthy yellow color they are today.
