Two screens for double the fun.
The second screen can be used in a variety of ways.
Framework created some very interesting laptops because the core premise was appealing: you could replace or add components to build the laptop you really wanted. However, Framework never had the infrastructure to turn this into a mainstream product category, and their displays were somewhat disappointing.
The Lenovo ThinkBook Modular PC addresses both of these issues. It combines Lenovo's excellent Yoga line with dual OLED displays, with the flexibility of the Framework, and the result is a dual-screen laptop, where one screen faces you and the other faces outward. That's not new; Lenovo has created this before, but what's novel is the ability to detach the second screen and use it as a secondary display, which can be set up using the included stand.
It's worth noting that you'll need a cable to connect the monitor to your laptop, at least in this concept device, but if you don't want to use it as a second monitor, you can also detach the keyboard and place the monitor in its place. This instantly transforms it from an external monitor into a perfect dual-monitor setup for on-the-go use, especially since it works in both landscape and portrait orientations, making the keyboard wireless.
What's truly surprising is how seamless this integration is. Everything connects via Pogo pins, and although this is a concept device, it's almost ready for a commercial launch. Given Lenovo's considerable experience in bringing concept devices to market fairly quickly after showcasing them at trade shows, this isn't surprising.
What's noteworthy is that the second screen can also be used as a perfect portable desktop display. Frequent travelers will always remember the dual 4K monitor setup in their home office. Lenovo has produced portable monitors before, but that meant carrying an extra device, whereas the ThinkBook Modular AI PC concept offers a seamless feel. The second screen is quite light and thin, reducing the overall size of the device when attached to the laptop.

If the ThinkBook Modular AI PC concept were simply a dual-screen laptop, it might not be as appealing as other devices, but its standout feature is its ability to replace existing laptop ports when needed.
The principle is simple: You don't always need an HDMI or USB-A port, but when you do need them and your laptop doesn't have one, it's a significant obstacle to productivity.
The ThinkBook Modular AI PC concept solves this problem by allowing you to detach the keyboard, remove an existing port, and replace it with the port you need at that moment. Most of us will default to using USB-C, but many buildings and offices may have peripherals that require USB-A or only support HDMI for sharing with the included TV.
It's worth noting that although this is just a concept, the ports are easily interchangeable, and there's a handy storage pouch for conveniently storing unused ports. Currently, Lenovo has only designed three ports – USB-C, USB-A, and HDMI – but if this product is released to the market, hopefully they will consider including an SD card reader or a Thunderbolt port .
This is definitely still a concept device, and Lenovo needs to improve the stand for the second monitor. However, unlike most concept products, this laptop also feels like it's poised for commercialization in the near future, and hopefully Lenovo will continue to pursue this idea and actually bring it to market.
Of course, there's still much we don't know, including crucial questions about pricing and battery life, but Lenovo is on the right track with this modular PC concept. The real question now is whether the company will produce it, and whether they can achieve what Framework failed to do by making modularity a key element in the PC industry.
