What color clothes are most susceptible to mosquito bites?

Researchers from the University of Washington (USA) tracked the behavior of midges (Aedes aegypti mosquito), which transmits dengue fever. The results showed that mosquitoes are easily attracted to certain colors.

So, when the weather turns hotter and more humid, when mosquitoes are more active, we should avoid wearing this color clothing to help reduce mosquito bites.

Mosquitoes sniff the air from their breath to detect nearby people and then scan a number of colors and patterns of images that may indicate food. In the lab, the researchers exposed zebra mosquitoes to colored dots and human hands. When the laboratory does not smell like carbon dioxide (CO2), mosquitoes repeatedly ignore the colored dots. But when CO2 is sprayed into the laboratory, mosquitoes ignore green, blue or purple, and fly towards red, orange, black or cyan.

Entomologists believe that mosquitoes are attracted to red colors because of the characteristics of midges or because red is the color mosquitoes see when looking at human skin. Meanwhile, mosquitoes are attracted to orange, black and cyan colors because being in dark areas can reproduce shadows, and are more able to absorb and retain heat.

In areas prone to mosquitoes, entomologists recommend that people avoid wearing red, orange, black and cyan colors in areas where mosquitoes are likely to hide to avoid mosquito bites. In addition, people should also wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, remove standing water in empty containers around the house, use mosquito nets for windows and doors, etc.
