Apps Based on Popular TV Games

App makers are always looking for new inspiration for their products.Whether they have spotted a gap in the market they want to expose, or if they are looking to take an existing idea and develop it, the race for new products is constant and ever-evolving.

That is particularly prominent in gaming, where developers are keen to find the next title that hooks players and turns into a goldmine.

Mashable reports how one game took over the world in just 28 days, namely Flappy Bird. It borrowed heavily from a previous title, the Helicopter Game, but boasted Super Nintendo style graphics and it became incredibly popular. That is the Holy Grail for developers looking for the next big hit, something that becomes a sensation.

Another angle they often try is basing apps on game shows, bringing something familiar to users as a gateway to their app. Whether the branding is identical or not is often irrelevant, if a game is based on a show a user watches or understands, then there is a hook which may lead to a download. Several games based on quiz shows are available right now, as we explore here.

Jeopardy!

Jeopardy is a US show which has been around since 1964 and is widely regarded as a staple of American quiz shows. It is a quiz with a twist; the answers come first, and contestants must find the questions.

With over 8,000 episodes having aired, there's no surprise that Jeopardy arrived on iOS and Android in the form of the Jeopardy World Tour. With a huge bank of clues and the chance to rank up and play other people around the world, it is a great example of a direct port from TV screen to mobile device.

Deal or No Deal

Some quiz games are not entirely suitable for a direct imitation on mobile, with Deal or No Deal being one. It simply consists of opening boxes, a theme that would not work particularly well on a mobile device. That has not stopped a developer using the imagery in a popular download though, which fans are sure to love.

There is a Slingo game on Foxy Bingo based on the popular Deal or No Deal concept that first originated in the Netherlands. It started life as Miljoenenjacht (Hunt for Millions) and was produced by Dutch producer Endemol, but shot to prominence in the UK under the enigmatic presentation of Noel Edmunds. However, the app combines elements of slots and bingo, hence the term 'slingo', but under the Deal or No Deal branding, demonstrating how creative developers can be with familiar shows.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The British show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire first aired in 1998 and quickly became a worldwide hit. It transferred to the US and Asia, forming part of the inspiration for the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, as well as the recent TV miniseries Quiz.

There is also a popular app based on the game which remains as true as possible to the original, only without the huge cash prize. Players answer a series of questions to move towards the grand prize. With a huge bank of questions, this one will keep you coming back time and again.

Family Fortunes

The UK audiences will know this program as Family Fortunes, whilst the US named it Family Feud, but whatever you call it, there is a classic game show here for you to play on your mobile. Whilst you can only play with your family on the actual show, which began in the US in 1976, on the app there is plenty of scope for wider play.

Challenge your family and friends, or play against others around the world. If you have always wanted a go at Family Fortunes, but never felt you wanted to appear on TV, now is your chance on your mobile device.
